What is an Entomologist?

Entomology is vibrant and incredibly diverse (not only talking about insects here)! 

We are Ben, Rosy, Idris, Ayman and Vera, past and present Royal Entomological Society Student Representatives, and we want to celebrate and highlight diversity, and improve equality and inclusion in the fabulous world of entomology.

We are all part of an open-minded, curious and insect-loving community and we invite you to join us as we celebrate our shared ento-passion and welcome you into this buzzing community. Yet, diverse role models in entomology are often underrepresented. There are many stereotypes about gender, age and ways of how an entomologist looks and works like- but there are all the other ways to be an entomologist!

By showcasing the people behind the science and passion, we hope to challenge these stereotypes and highlight the diversity of individuals, backgrounds and career paths that make our community so vibrant.

Our Inspiration

‘What is an Entomologist?’ was inspired by many projects working to change the perception of scientists and researchers – here we would like to highlight them!

• ‘500 Queer Scientists’ platforms LGBTQ+ people and allies working in STEM to increase the visibility of role models for the next generation of scientists.
• ‘What is a Scientist?’ and ‘Am I a Scientist?’ are projects and teaching resources developed by Dr Emma Waters to highlight the diversity of scientist identities.
• ‘Picture a Scientist’ is a documentary that explores discrimination, sexism and racism in academia. Through experiences of women in natural sciences, it shows the persistent barriers they face and their ongoing struggle for equal recognition, respect and equal opportunities.
